In 4th grade students are no longer "learning to read" but "reading to learn" and it is critical that they spend time out of school reading.
Research indicates that 20 minutes of out-of-school reading time per day results in double the reading achievement gains usually expected from year to year. I strongly encourage you to not only help your student complete their reading log minutes each day but also read at home together or as a family. Home reading should be a positive and enjoyable experience. The primary goal is to help your student feel confident and enjoy books.
Make it fun, so your student wants to read. Have them tell you what they read about after they complete their daily reading homework.
The most fluent readers are the ones that have a lot of practice!
Daily Reading Homework
Read a minimum of 100 minutes per week.
Record your weekly minutes in your planner and have a parent sign it. Planners are checked each Monday in class and students will be rewarded for completing their minutes.
